After you’ve tackled some of the major items on your wedding to-do list, like setting a date and securing a location for the ceremony and reception, you may be wondering when you should start looking for your wedding bands. In most wedding ceremonies, the wedding bands play a crucial role, so you definitely don’t want to wait too long to shop for your rings.

Every couple is different. Some like to shop for their wedding bands even before they get engaged so they can get a better idea of which bands would look best with certain engagement rings. Most couples, on the other hand, start shopping for wedding bands months or sometimes years after they first got engaged.

We recommend visiting your favorite local jeweler at least six weeks before your wedding. This will give you enough time to see and try on all of the different wedding band styles as well as give the jeweler enough time to create or order a customized wedding band if you decide to go that route. Most wedding bands (that aren’t already in-stock) only take a few days to a couple weeks to create, but it’s better to be on the safer side of your timeline so you won’t have to worry about not having your wedding rings in time for the big day.

If you’re someone who likes to think major decisions over, you may want to visit your local jewelry store even sooner than six weeks before your wedding. A wedding band is something that you’re going to be wearing for the rest of your life, so it makes sense if you want to take some time to consider all of your options. If you think you’re going to need some extra time to make a final decision, we recommend visiting your jewelry store three or more months before your wedding to get an idea of all of the different wedding ring styles. You can take pictures of different bands on your finger and refer to those pictures later on while you’re contemplating your decision.

And if you decide to elope and need wedding bands right away, don’t worry. Most jewelry stores have plenty of in-stock wedding bands for purchase.

So in summary, the time to shop for your wedding bands all depends on how quickly your wedding is approaching and how much time you think you’ll need to make a decision. For most couples, coming in at least six weeks before your wedding will allow you plenty of time to select the perfect wedding band and have it created or sized if needed.
