An astounding 81% of soon to be engaged women prefer platinum rings over any other alternative. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise considering all of platinum’s many benefits. One of the benefits of owning platinum jewelry is that it doesn’t flake off when scratched (unlike gold). The metal is also able to stand up to everyday wear, allowing you to pass down your jewelry to loved ones if you so choose. Additionally, you’ll be able to come up with more intricate, one-of-a kind band designs due to platinum’s high malleability.

Besides all of the benefits listed above, platinum is also hypoallergenic, so you’ll never have to worry about your jewelry piece adversely affecting your skin. You can also be sure that your diamond will be secure since platinum prongs are less likely to break or wear down.

Another reason why platinum is popular among many future brides is because the natural sheen of the metal tends to bring out the brilliance of a diamond. It is also the perfect choice for engagement rings because like diamonds, platinum will last as long as your love for one another.

Some interesting facts about platinum’s history include:

  • The metal dates back to 1200 B.C. when it was first discovered in Egyptian jewelry. It was also found in hieroglyphics decorating the sarcophagus of the King of Thebes daughter from 700 B.C.
  • Traces of platinum disappeared for many centuries until 1590 when Spanish conquistadors found the metal and threw it back into Ecuador rivers in order for it to ripen. They gave it the name platina, which meant little silver.
  • In 1780, King Louis XVI declared platinum, “the only metal fit for kings.”
  • Louis Cartier was the first person to successfully create platinum jewelry and reveal the hidden characteristics of the metal. This occurred in the early 1900s.
