Earring Stud Settings

When looking to purchase either diamond studs or colored gemstone studs, you’ll not only have to decide what size gemstone you’d prefer, but also the type of setting you’d like the gem to be placed in. Here are the four most popular types of earring stud settings:

  • Classic 4-Prong: Also referred to as a basket setting, 4-prong earrings have four projections of metal (prongs) to securely hold the gemstone in place. This setting maximizes the amount of light that shines through both the top and the sides of the gemstone, creating extra sparkle.

  • Martini: A more modern option, the martini setting features three prongs instead of the classic four. Like its name implies, the design resembles that of a martini glass and provides a more streamlined silhouette. In this setting, the gemstone sits lower and closer to the earlobe, providing a more visible, brilliant and sleeker look.

  • Bezel: The most secure earring setting option available, bezel settings completely cover the sides of the gemstone with metal. This style provides a simple, smooth look while also providing optimal protection.

  • Halo: Refers to a frame or “halo” of smaller gemstones surrounding the center gem. The major benefit of halo settings is that they can make the center gemstone appear larger. Oftentimes set with diamonds, a halo can also add extra sparkle to the earring.
